Freetown – Police in the Sierra Leonean capital of Freetown on Thursday burned over 700kg of cocaine seized in a record drugs bust. The haul was discovered aboard a Venezuelan plane bearing a fake Red Cross emblem in July last year. They were burned on the orders of a judge who on Tuesday sentenced 15 people to up to five years in prison with hefty fines for their role in trying to smuggle the consignment into the West African country.Given an estimated street value of $200-million, the drugs pile went up in smoke in a special ceremony attended by a dozen government ministers, United Nations officials and a large contingent of armed security personnel.Police inspector-general Acha Kamara told the gathering that “the day marked a significant milestone in our collective national resolve to fight against the drug scourge”.
